To the Young Bride

You were young and beautiful standing there,
A halo of clover flower in your hair.
And he with a smile that was oh-so-bright,
It wasn't the stars lit the sky that night
As he looked at his bride so fair

Your bare feet buried in the rocky sand,
You both were smiling as he took your hand
And slipped on your finger a cheap plastic ring
While I sat and watched from my seat on the swing
Thinking, "Isn't love grand?"

I remember the words of your childish vow
To love each other forever, and how
Much to each other you promised to mean.
But that was when you were seven; at seventeen,
You're too young to get married right now.
